Yūgen Gyokuro

Gyokuro tea, translated as « Jade dew » (or « precious dew », « jewel dew », in reference to the green color of the infusion), is a special type of green tea with the highest vibrancy and among the finest of all Japanese teas. To produce Gyokuro, the tea bushes will be shaded from the sun 3 weeks before the harvest, filtering 85% of the sun’s rays. This process is slowing the growth of the plants, allowing the tea leaves to develop more depth and to concentrate a higher level of chlorophyll, amino acids (L-theanine) and vibrancy, resulting in a highly aromatic and complex tasting tea with very little tannins. While most Japanese teas are from the Yabukita cultivar of Camellia sinensis, Gyokuro is often made from a specialized variety such as Asahi, Okumidori, Yamakai and Saemidori.

« Yūgen Gyokuro » was selected during our trip to Japan in May 2018. Long before traveling to Japan to make our selection, Takaki san, the tea producer of this Gyokuro, was someone we were already admiring. We had heard a lot about him from tea friends who were already working with him.

Beyond the fact that he is a wonderful human, Takaki san is one of the very few to still produce authentic « Hon Gyokuro », entirely hand-picked, and traditionally shaded under « rice straw », in opposition to the black plastic mesh commonly used today in most gyokuro plantations. His tea is a rare soulful delight. We have so much respect for the authenticity and passion put in the work of Takaki san and feel incredibly blessed to be able to share it with our community.

Earth vibrancy: Pure, Clean from chemicals and Vibrant. Sustainable farming. Authentic traditional techniques and process. From the plantation of Takaki Akihito.

Tasting experience: Soft bright green liquor. Smooth, rich, soft flavor. Sweet herbaceous aroma of freshly buttered tender greens (spinach, swiss chard) with a marine character evoking seaweed. Delicate finish. Incredibly « Umami » in taste, translated as « tasteful ».

Energy experience (Qi): Awakening. Transformative. Joyful. « Yūgen » is an important Japanese concept that could be translated by « a deep awareness of the Universe ». Yūgen Gyokuro is a vibrant tea that will awaken your sensitivity to the world around you. It will enlighten your heart and will encourage joyful presence.
