ESSENCE - Crafted from fabrics hand-dyed with indigo, these handwoven pants feature a traditional Dong diamond pattern, an ancient and mesmerizing motif that echoes the rhythms of nature and the memory of the mountains.
At the ankle, a small button adorned with a jade bead allows the volume to be adjusted according to the practice, helping to contain and recenter the body’s energy when needed. The garment can open or close, expand or gather, following the movement of Qi.
This piece offers both freedom and structure. The legs move with fluidity and lightness, while the body remains rooted. It supports the circulation of energy along the lower body, guiding the flow through the hips, the legs, and down into the Earth, reinforcing a sense of grounding, stability, and inner alignment.
FENGWU 风舞 translates as “Dance of the Wind”. Like the wind moving through trees and bamboo, they invite a state of effortless flow, where movement arises without force and the body follows its natural rhythm.
STORY - These pants are handcrafted by women artisans from the Dong indigenous community, part of the DEYI textile cooperative. From the cultivation of cotton to natural dyeing with medicinal plants, through weaving and final sewing, every step is carried out with the utmost care — preserving centuries-old traditions and honoring Mother Earth. These craftswomen live and work in deep harmony with Nature, in small remote villages of Rongjiang County, Guizhou Province, Southwest China.
Among the Dong people, indigo is considered as a sacred medicinal plant. When preparing the indigo dye vat, the women prepare an altar to ask for blessings from the deities of Nature and the female ancestors, inviting a smooth and harmonious fermentation process. The indigo vat is a living ecosystem — even considered as a member of the family by community.
These handwoven pants are carrying the spirit of indigo medicine and the deep love of the artisans for their craft — a wisdom passed down through generations of women.
Please note that the woven indigo belt on the second photo is not included with the pants.
